A small, brief blue spark at the instant a plug makes contact is usually normal. A spark that is large, yellow or white, repeated, or accompanied by buzzing, heat, scorch marks, or a burning smell is not normal. Stop using the outlet and have it inspected.

Why a Brief Contact Spark Can Happen

When an energized device is plugged in, current may jump the last fraction of space before the metal surfaces fully meet. The brief arc is easier to notice in a dark room and with devices that draw more power at startup.


Vacuums, space heaters, hair dryers, power supplies, and other higher-draw devices can make the instant flash more noticeable. Unplugging an operating device can create a similar brief arc. Switching the device off before connecting or disconnecting it may reduce this effect.


What Makes Outlet Sparking Dangerous?


Dangerous sparking usually comes from a connection that is loose, worn, damaged, contaminated by moisture, or shorting. Fault arcing produces concentrated heat and can damage the receptacle, wiring insulation, electrical box, and nearby material.


What Should You Do Right Now?


If the spark was tiny, blue, and instant, switch the device off and test it in another known-good outlet. If the spark was large, repeated, yellow or white—or the outlet is hot, buzzing, discolored, or smells burned—stop using it, turn off the circuit if safe, and call an electrician.



If the spark is followed by a dead outlet, check for a tripped breaker or upstream GFCI. Do not repeatedly reset protection when it trips again, and never force a breaker or RESET button to remain on.
