A plug that keeps falling out usually means the metal contacts inside the outlet have lost their grip. Those contacts cannot be tightened or repaired—the receptacle needs replacement. Do not bend plug prongs, add tape, or wedge anything into the outlet. If it is warm, discolored, buzzing, or sparking, stop using it and call an electrician promptly.
Why Does My Plug Keep Falling Out?
Spring-like metal contacts inside a receptacle hold each plug blade. Years of plugging, unplugging, heat, and heavy adapters weaken their tension. Once the outlet no longer grips firmly, replacing the receptacle is the proper fix.
High-use outlets often wear first: kitchen counters, hallway vacuum outlets, bedside charging locations, and receptacles supporting bulky power adapters. The problem may also be the plug itself, so try two or three known-good plugs before blaming the outlet.
The Hidden Risk Behind a Loose Plug
A weak connection creates electrical resistance. Resistance produces heat at the exact contact point hidden inside the receptacle. A small gap can also allow arcing, which can damage metal contacts, melt plastic, and worsen the connection.
The circuit breaker may not trip because a poor connection can overheat without drawing enough total current to trigger ordinary overcurrent protection. That is why a visual and electrical inspection matters.

Call a licensed electrician if there is scorching, melted insulation, aluminum branch wiring, an ungrounded two-prong outlet, moisture, repeated tripping, or any uncertainty about the circuit.
Should You Upgrade to Tamper-Resistant Outlets?
When a worn outlet is already being replaced, a tamper-resistant receptacle is a sensible upgrade. Internal shutters open only when equal pressure is applied to both slots, helping prevent keys and other objects from reaching energized contacts.
